St. Isaac's Cathedral, both surprises and delights just at the same time. Monolithic columns, a huge dome, statues of the 12 apostles and sculptures on the pediment, many bas-reliefs say that many talented people did their best to build it. The modest Church in which Peter I was married was rebuilt and decorated by all Russian monarchs. The latest version of the architect Montferrand in the style of classicism pleases the citizens up to this day. Inside the Cathedral is decorated with malachite, gilded bronze, lapis lazuli, and skillfully laid mosaic. Such painters as Brullov, Bruni, Riess worked here. In one of the windows one can see almost 30metre stained-glass depicting the Risen Christ. In 1922, the wealth of the temple was withdrawn for the needs of the poor. The Bolsheviks loaded 2 tons of silver and almost 50 kg of gold. Today you can climb the dome of the Cathedral and enjoy the magnificent views of St. Petersburg.
