Hurricane Katrina is the most destructive hurricane in the history of the USA. It was a category 5 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale, and the sixth strongest hurricane in the Atlantic basin in recorded history. It took place at the end of August 2005. The most severe damage was caused to New Orleans in Louisiana, where about 80% of the city's area was under water. In the result of the disaster 1836 residents were killed, economic losses amounted to $125 billion. The hurricane began to form on August 23 in the region of Bahamas. On Monday, August 29, 2005, hurricane Katrina reached the south-eastern coast of the United States near Louisiana and Mississippi. In the zone of its action were Louisiana, South and centre of Mississippi, South Alabama, West Georgia, West and South Florida. Economic damage amounted to $125 billion. For the restoration of the affected areas, the USA Congress allocated $110 billion. In August 2006, more than 100,000 families were living in trailers because of the loss of their homes.
