Mr. Little and his family lived in New York City. Mr. Little worked in an office. His wife, Mrs. Little, took care of the house. She was a kind woman and liked animals. She kept a white cat called Snowball. She also liked to play the piano. Mr. and Mrs. Little had a son called George, who went to school and liked to play ping-pong. In every way it was quite a usual family. But one day something very unusual happened to them, and that was when Mrs. Little's second son was born.
When he was born, everybody saw that he was no bigger than a mouse. The baby looked very much like a mouse in every way. He was only two inches high, he had a sharp nose, a long tail and whiskers. Before he was many days old he began to walk, just like a mouse. Mr. and Mrs. Little called him Stuart, and made him a bed out of a cigarette box.
Mrs. Little saw at once that baby clothes were not good for Stuart. So she made him a fine blue suit with a pocket in which he could keep his handkerchief. She also gave him a grey hat and a small stick.
Very soon Stuart could not only walk, but also run, jump and climb lamps by the cord. And that even before he was a month old!
When Stuart was a month old he was still so small and light that his mother sent for the doctor. The doctor liked Stuart very much and said that it was very unusual for an American family to have a mouse. He took Stuart's temperature and found that it was normal for a mouse. He listened to his heart and looked into his ears. Everything was all right, and Mrs. Little was very glad to hear it.
"Feed him up!" said the doctor and went away.

The education system in Australia  consists of 12 years. A lot of children start PRIMARY school at the age of 5 years (Year 1) and the child studies there UNTIL they are around 12 years old (Year 7). There are many types of EDUCATION for children up to 5 years, but the main ones are the "Child Care" regulated centres or families in registered residences who take care of the kids in a system called "Family Day Care". Students go to SECONDARY school when they are 12-13 years (Year 8). The COMPULSORY education is up to Year 10. The Years 11 and 12 are OPTIONAL but are necessary if student wants to get  HIGHER education. Students who leave school in a Year 10 can start working or take any VOCATIONAL course. The last 2 years of high school are where students begin to lead their EDUCATION towards their chosen professions. The students will CHOOSE what to study depending on the career which they want to follow. For example, a student who wants to do Engineering in University should CHOOSE subjects such as physics, and high level mathematics instead of subjects such as history, or biology. The RESULTS of the last two years are the most important ones, good results are necessary to ENTER a university. Students have LESSONS from Monday to Friday,  8:45 am to 3 pm, with a BREAK for lunch. EXTRACURRICULAR activities such as soccer practice, dance classes, etc.  are done after school hours or Saturday mornings.  Australia is in the Southern Hemisphere and so the academic year STARTS at the end of January and finishes in December.
