The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is situated on the British Isles, the largest of which are Great Britain and Ireland. The British Isles are separated from  continental Europe by the North Sea and the English Channel, the narrowest part of which the Straight of Dover, is 33 kms wide.
In the  west the British Isles are washed by the Atlantic Ocean. The  Irish Sea separates  Great Britain from  Ireland.
The United Kingdom consists of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
The Northern part of the island of Great Britain (Scotland) is occupied by the mountains which are called the Highlands of Northern Scotland and the Southern Uplands with the Central Lowland of Scotland between them. The Highlands of Northern Scotland are divided into the North- western Highlands and the Grampians. The highest mountain in Great Britain is Ben Nevis; it is situated in the Grampians.
The  Pennines are the mountains situated in the central part of the island of Great Britain, the Pennines are separated from the Southern Uplands by the  valley of the river Tyne. TheTyne flows into the North Sea.
Wales is the mountainous part of Great Britain. It is occupied by the Cambrians. The highest mountain in the Cambrians is Snowdon.
The longest river in Great Britain is the Severn. It rises in the Cambrians and flows into the Bristol Channel.
The Thames in not so long as the Severn but it is the most important river in Great Britain. London, the capital of the United Kingdom, is situated on theThames.
