Opened on 1 December 2011 and it quickly became the most popular form of transport in the city.
At first, there were only seven stations: Raiymbek Batyr, Zhibek Zholy, Almaly, Abay, Baikonur, Auezov Theatre
and Alatau. It may be short, but it is comfortable,' says the school teacher Marzhan Rakhimova, who was one of
the first passengers on the metro. Just four years later, two more stations were added (Sayran and Moskva) and
today the metro covers a route of over 11 kilometres. There are plans to build more stations in the future. When
the entire network is complete, there will be three lines and about 45 kilometres of track.
Thousands of people use the metro every day. It is the safest, fastest and most convenient way to get around the
city. 'I prefer the metro because it's very reliable. The trains are always on time,' says 14-year-old Yeldos Bazayev.
The metro is open every day from 6 a.m. until midnight. The best thing is you don't have to wait. Whenever you
arrive at the station, you know the next train leaves in ten minutes.'
Some of the metro stations have a very modern design, others look more traditional. The terminal station
Raiymbek Batyr is a combination of both. There are marble floors and
beautiful artwork on the walls, including a picture of the Kazakh warrior Ralymbek Batyr. The next station, Zhibek
Zholy (the Silk Road), is the busiest in the city. It is famous for the ceramic reliefs created by the artist Gaziz
Yeshkenov. You can learn a lot about the culture, history and geography of Kazakhstan by looking at the reliefs.
The Auezov Theatre station is also stunning with its spacious halls, bright lights and colourful mosaics. Some of
the walls are decorated with plaques showing traditional scenes from the life of the Kazakh people.
'I like all the stations, but my favourite is Balkonur,' says 18-year-old student Tolkyn Saplyeva.
It's named after the cosmodrome in southern Kazakhstan and it looks a bit like a spaceship. For me a journey on
the Almaty Metro is like a journey through history into a future."

At the present I go to school, so I'm very busy on weekdays. Because of this, unfortunately, I can't help in the house as often as my parents wish. However, I do my best to find the time to clean house.Every morning I get up and without any loss of time, I do my bed and go to the bathroom. Yawning, I wash my face, then I brush my teeth and go to have breakfast. After breakfast, I always wash the dishes myself after me and my family, because my mom and dad leave for work before me. They have no time to wash the dishes. At 8 o'clock sharp, I make my way to the school and at 4 on the dot I come back home. On my return, I cook something easy so that I might eat, and then I get down to the lessons. Lessons take me from half an hour to two hours a day. It all depends on how much homework our teacher gives to us. Then I put all the books and notebooks into place and start cleaning my room. Every day I dust. Every other day I vacuum. Sometimes in the evening we go shopping together with dad. From time to time, I help my mom wash, iron and do spring cleaning. But this happens not quite often. On the weekend I rest, meet friends, play in the yard and in the park across the street. She often gets angry with me for this, so I try to study well and make her happy making good progress in studies.
