Singapore
Singapore is a thriving city-state lying in Asia almost on the equator. Singapore consists of 63 islands, covering the area of about 680 square kilometers. Its population is almost four million. Singapore is known as the city of steel, concrete, and glass. But still, western modernity here combines with eastern culture. There are lots of skyscrapers and also many buildings marked as national monuments for their historical value. The city is green and there are lots of palms and mango trees. It is extremely hot in Singapore throughout the year, and the humidity is very high, so most of the buildings have air conditioners. The city is famous for a great number of museums specializing on history, art and what not in Singapore there are fascinating areas of Little India, Chinatown, Arab Street, and others. Along the Singapore River there are several quays which offer entertainment year round, in green and friendly atmosphere. Singapore is a main shipping center. At the port there are hundreds and thousands of containers and oil-tankers. Nowadays Singapore’s economy is highly developed. Together with South Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan, Singapore was one of the four ―Asian Tigers‖. Developed economy of the city makes it one of the most expensive cities in Southeast Asia

British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is probably the best non-commercial radio and television system, formed by royal charter in 1927 to "educate and enlighten" the citizens..It includes five national and local radio stations, national television stations, the International BBC World Service and BBC Worldwide Television.
There are four radio channels. Radio 1 has mostly pop music; Radio 2 has light music, comedy, sport. Radio 3 has classical and modern music, talks on serious subjects. Radio 4 presents current news reports and discussions.
The BBC also has two television channels BBC 1 and BBC 2. BBC 2 offers more serious programmes than BBC 1. It shows discussions, adaptations of novels into plays and films, operas and concerts. BBC 1 offers lighter plays and series, humour and sport, but there are also some interesting documentaries.

Dear Zilola,

It was great to hear from you.

Yesterday was ‘Take your daughter to work’ day. It’s the day when parents take their daughters to work with them.

The daughters spend the whole day with them at work. They see what their parents do and  they begin to understand the world of work. Everyone takes part in it when they are 15-16 years old. It helps us to prepare for getting a job.  I enjoyed the day. When we arrived at work there were other women with their  daughters. It was interesting to see what it is like to be in an office all day, to answer the  phone, to type a letter and I did some filing too, which was a bit difficult. I was very proud to see that people respect my mother for her efficiency and her pleasant manner, which helps her to solve problems. Now I know what she  means when she talks about ‘her team’ and being part of a team. They all work together,  helping each other. We took some photos. I’ll send next time I write.

Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Love

Christy Moran
