Let's go to the cinema! Today you can buy videos to watch a movie at home, but millions of people around the world still prefer to go to the cinema in their small or big city for "movie night". And before television arrived in people's homes, going to the cinema was something really special and truly wonderful. The golden age of filmmaking and cinema release was between 1930 and 1950. The movie stars seemed like kings and queens. Movie theaters were "picture palaces" where, for the price of a ticket, you could be in a magical world. Everything was possible in this world. At present, moviegoers are much smaller and usually younger than those of the Golden Age. Many of the "picture palaces" are now multi-screen cinemas with four or five smaller cinemas inside the same building. Today's films appear on video and then on TV after viewers have seen them at the box office. But some movies don't look that good on TV, they need a big screen before you can really enjoy them. Television cannot do this. You may agree or disagree with this, but for many people the cinema is still the only place to watch a movie. Plus, the cinema is the only place where you can watch a brand new movie before your friends do and decide if you like it or not. Of course, everyone has their favorite films - action or thrillers, comedies, psychological dramas, fantasy, adventure and crime films, horror films or musicals. But cinema is always in the center of our attention, it excites, entertains and educates us.
