I'll speak for myself. The first country I ever went to was France. I am from Pakistan and worked with a french firm locally. My french colleagues offered to put me up should I ever want to visit and that's exactly what I did.
So off to France I went with my only prior air travel being within Pakistan twice before.
I was fluent in French so cherished the opportunity to speak the local language. My word what a beautiful experience it was. I was able to go to the smallest towns or the biggest cities and buy myself a loaf of bread without a hassle.
It was surreal living in a foreign language. Prior to that I only ever spoke English or Urdu in my daily routine back home.
That was 17 years ago. Since then I've been to almost 40 countries exploring cultures, food, people, language, places just about everything possible.
I wouldn't know what to do with myself if I wasn't able to travel abroad.
