You’ve certainly heard the saying “We are what we eat”. Food can be healthy and
do us good or not very healthy and do harm. One of the most popular dishes in
Great Britain, fish and chips, is far from being healthy. But it is very tasty.
It all started about 150 years ago when women in poor English families had to go
out to work in factories. There was no time to shop and cook, so they bought fast
food in the street, on the way back from work. The most popular was fried fish
with a piece of bread. Then the first chips came from France. You could buy them
in the street as well. Then a Londoner Joseph Malin thought of selling fish and
chips together. He opened the first fish and chips shop in London’s East End.
