(D.Crystal, English as a Global Language).

There is an opinion that in China more than speaking English people, than in the United States. Quite probably - in total English as native or foreign 1,8 billion people today use. It allows to recognize it as language of interethnic communication - lingua franca.

The reasons of why English became global, are comprehensively described by such recognized scientist-linguist as David Cristal (D.Crystal, English as a Global Language). Historical, social and economic factors, in a combination to characteristics of the language, led to that English became language of trade, diplomacy and, at last, the Internet.

In spite of the fact that it is considered that in English most of all words (about 800 000) and the richest synonymic ranks, exist also its such artificially created variations as Basic English and Special English. In them the limited quantity of words and designs for simplification of studying, understanding and, finally, language use is used.

As fairly marks out D. Cristal, never earlier people traveled very much and so often, and never earlier was such number of business and cultural contacts between the different people. For this reason global language is necessary, English studying as foreign becomes more and more popular, and translational resources are more and more demanded.

There used to be a lovely residential area in the city centre, but in the 1960s the local authority SUGGESTED to redevelop it as a shopping district. This ___NEEDED knocking down all the houses and building huge car parks to create space for shoppers from out of town. What's strange is that no one INVOLVED opposing the idead at the time. Even the residents SEEMED to accept that the area LET to be modernized. If you DECIDED turning houses into shops on such a big scale today, you wouldn't be ALLOWED to do it. The result was that we aFFORD them spoil the character of the centre. People shopped there in the day but at night everyone AVOIDED going there because of drug dealing and crime. Now, fifty years later, the local authority is building houses there again, but rents are so high that ordinary people can't CONSIDERED___ to live there.
