Halloween One of the national festivals of English-speaking countries is Halloween. It takes place on October 31 on Allhallow’s Eve. The pumpkin is a symbol of this festival in which offensive face is cut out. A lighted candle is put into the pumpkin. A holiday which is celebrated in many English speaking countries on the 31 of October is called Halloween. On this night people wear scary costumes, they often dress up as witches, ghosts, goblins. Children go from house to house ‘threatening’ ‘Trick or Treat’. In this traditional way they ask for sweets and the house’s owners give them treats with pleasure. If the owners don’t give candies, children can play tricks. For example, throw eggs at windows or put toilet paper in trees. Everyone understands that this is just for making fun. The holiday of Halloween begins on Pagan holiday Samhain which is also known as Day of the Dead or All Saints. This is a happy and joyful holiday even though people celebrate death. It is believed that on this night the souls of dead people are believed to return back to Earth. Some people say that on the night of 31 October the gap between the dead and the living world is closer, that is why the souls of dead return back to Earth. These souls are believed to look for a living creature for possessing during the next year. Those people who don’t want to be possessed by dead souls should leave drinks and foods to please these souls outside their doors. First beggars begin taking these food and drinks, and then they began begging for it and over time children started to. As for the dressing up, there’s another tradition. People dressed up as a scary things and ghost so the souls of the dead thought they were dead, too and to scary them away. New Year is the most long-awaited (долгожданный) holiday. Many people associate it with magic and gifts. First of all it is surrounded by the wonderful smell of tangerines and Christmas trees, which helps to create a festive mood (праздничное настроение). People of all ages truly (искренне) believe that in New Year their goals (цели) and wishes will come true. New Year is an international holiday, but in every country it is celebrated in many different ways (разными горький) food. In Spain on this day there is a tradition to swallow (глотать) one grape (виноград) for every time the bell chimes (звон курантов) and make a wish. On New Year my family and I decorate the house and the Christmas tree and give each other gifts, wishing success (успех) in the New Year. New Year’s Eve is my favorite holiday and I always look forward (ждать с нетерпением) to it.
