In 2004, 23-year-old Mark Zuckerberg, launched Facebook while he was studying at Harvard University. People wanted a university website with students profiles, so Mark decided to do something about it. 1,200 students signed up within 24 hours! He then expanded the site to include other universities. Mark was facing some difficulties, though. Three Harvard seniors insisted that while Zuckerberg was working on a similar project with them, he was using their ideas to create Facebook. This didn't stop Mark, though, and Facebook soon became the biggest social networking site in the world with 500 million users to date.
One place where people live under the ground is a small town called Coober Pedy which is in the south of Australia.
Most of the people in this town were
MINERS, they looked for white stones and lived in simple holes under the ground.
Today their homes are not simple holes. At present in this town there are various quite beautiful
BUILDINGS.
Coober Pedy has homes,
EXPENSIVE hotels, restaurants,
and churches. A new house with five rooms cost $25,000.
People live underground for
DIFFERENT reasons.
One reason is that there are no trees. The last tree died in 1971.
The second reason is the very hot weather. The temperature in summer is
NEARLY 50 degrees.
In the future many people will live under the ground. Japan has a lot of people and little land. Japan is going to build a new city under the ground. About 100,000 people are going to live there.
Underground cities are very
INTERESTING. But can
people live with no sun and no sky?
