It was Kate's birthday last Thursday. I thought it was a good idea to do some shopping and buy her a present in the nearest department store. I knew that her husband, Paul, had bought her a beautiful ring and was sure Kate would like it. I didn't have to work till late that day, so at two o'clock I walked down High Street. "If I give Kathy her favorite perfume, she will be pleased, " I thought. At the perfume counter I asked for Kate's favorite perfume. The saleswoman was not sure whether she was able to help me. "We don't have that, do we?" she asked her colleague. The latter shook her head. I was about left the counter when I saw a girl of about twelve slept away from her mother, seized a huge bottle of perfume from the counter and put it into her bag. The girl's behavior made me speak. "Excuse me," I said. "Your daughter just stole a large bottle of perfume." The mother looked at me in amazement. She turned to her daughter. "You didn't steal that big bottle that was on display, did you?" The girl noded. "I told you hundreds of times that the big one on display is always empty!" She angrily took the bottle from her daughter and laid it on display. "Why didn't you take the one at the back? Let me explain to you again that you should always take one of the boxes at the back. Do you understand?" The woman took the box of perfume she was speaking about and a minute later I saw them both disappeared into the crowd as quickly as they could.
