Dutch settlers founded this city in 1613. That time it was called New Amsterdam. In 1664, New Amsterdam was captured by British troops and renamed in New York. The first Europeans (the Dutch) built a wooden wall to protect themselves from attacks. This street gave its name to a street in Lower Manhattan and the street, in turn, became synonymous with American finance and trade. This street, of course, is Wall Street. The New York Stock Exchange and American Stock Exchange are both in the Wall Street area. There are many investment banks, headquarters of large corporations in this street. The twin towers of the World Trade Center used to rise 1350 feet above the city. But after the tragedy of September, 11th, 2011 they became the part of the history of the USA.
