Булак - канал, раньше отделявший верхнюю и нижнюю части города. В это был естественный проток, длиной около 2 км из озера Нижний Кабан в реку Казанку. В XVI веке "Балак" (так он правильно произносится) сделали судоходным. До 1552 года по правую сторону вела деревянная посадская стена. Через него было перекинуто семь мостов, все они были перестроены и заменены, кроме "моста слёз", существующего в каменном варианте с 1907 года. Это одна из важных артерий города, где расположены административные и офисные здания, старинные постройки, Педагогический Университет. На улице Право-Булачной к юбилею Казани готовится к сдаче новый офисно-деловой центр. Здесь же сконцентрированы развлекательные заведения города, ночные клубы и рестораны.
