2)Halloween
Halloween is a festival that takes place on October 31. In the United States children wear costumes and masks and go trick-or-treating. Many of them carve jack-o'-lantens out of pumpkins. Fortunetelling and storytelling about ghosts and witches are popular activities.
Halloween developed from new year festivals and festivals of the dead. Christian church established a festival on November 1 called All Saints' Day so that people could continue to celebrate their festivals.
The Mass said on All Saints' Day was called Allhallowmass. The day before All Saints' Day was known all hallows' Eve or All Hallow e'en.
The main Halloween activity for children is trick-or-treating. Children dress in costumes and masks and go from door to door saying "trick or treat". The neighbours give children such treats as candy, fruit and pennies so that children do not play tricks on them.
Jack-o'-lanterns are hallowed-out pumpkins with face carved into one side. Most jack-o'-lanterns contain a candle inside. An Irish legend says that jack-o'-lanterns are named after the man called Jack.
He could not enter heaven because he was a miser, and he could not enter hell because he had played jokes on devil. As a result, Jack has to walk on the earth with his lantern until Judgment Day.
Fortunetelling is an important part of Halloween. For example, a coin, a ring, and a thimble were baked into a cake. It was believed that the person who found the coin would become wealthy. The one who found the ring would marry soon. And the person who found the thimble would never get married. Today people practice cardreading or palmistry.
People once believed that there were many ghosts and witches on the Earth and that they met on October 31 to worship the devil. Today, people do not believe in ghosts and witches but they like to tell stories about them on Halloween.
6) American Schools.
The American system of school education differs from the system in some countries. There are state-supported public schools, private elementary schools, and private secondary schools. Public schools are free and private schools are fee-paying. Each individual state has its own sys-tem of public schools. Elementary education begins at the age of six with the first grade and continues up to the eighth grade. The elementary school is followed by four years of the secondary school or high as it is called. In some states the last two years of the elementary and the first years of the secondary school are combined into a junior high school. Besides giving general education, some high schools teach subjects useful to those who hope to find jobs in industry and agriculture. Some give preparatory education to those planning to enter colleges and universities.
How attractive is a person who goes beyond physical qualities. A lot of factors contribute to how attractive someone these are: health, wealth, food, willpower, society, personality and so on. Some people assert, that men withstand age better and remain attractive longer. But is it a right statement?
On the one hand women age faster, because they spend more time at work today, so they don't have enough time for themselves. Moreover, women are more emotional, than men. It certainly makes them unattractive. Therefore,a lot of makeup have bad effect on appearance.
On the other hand, among men there are a lot of smokers and drinkers. As far as I know, bad habits affect on the health and appearance. Futhermore, women, when they are under stress, they ask for their friends* help or someone from the family. This is a better way of coping with stress. However, men keep everything in themselves. As a result, an old, unhealthy appearance appears. Moreover, their genes play an important role.
In my opinion, I agree with this statment. Really, women are more emotional and sensetive, than men are. Usually men have more willpower and stamila in our crazy world. It helps them to withstand age better and remain an attracrive person longer. So, talking all these factors into account, my conclusion is that women get old really more quickly, than men. But women live longer.
