The materials _in_ class A fires are _best_ extinguished _with_ water. The range _of_ equipment _available_ _for_ attack allows the successful extinguishment _of_ almost any size _of_ fire _with_ the minimum amount _of_ damage.
Dry powders are also effective but unless there are special considerations such as rapid–spreading surface fire they are messy and expensive and have no advantage _over_ water. Carbon dioxide is not _specially_ suited _for_ class A fires and _in_ the absence _of_ special hazards it should not be generally used. However, there are _special_ cases where total flooding systems are used to protect valuable goods which could be __easily_ damaged _by_ water. Foam and vaporizing liquids are _unsuitable_ _to _ use _on_ this type _of_ fire and should not be used.
