Dear Kate,
Thank you for your letter. It was nice to hear from you. Sorry, I haven't written for so long because I had an exam.
So, you asked me to tell you about holidays. Well, my family with me often on picnic on my holiday. Sometimes we go on picnic with friends in summer. Most of all I like when picnic is located near the river, where I can swim and fish. I really like fishing. But sometimes it is raining on a picnic. It is not a problem for my family. We always take a special tent, which we use for our picnic and hide from the rain.
I heard your school band won. It is great! What were you doing? How many bands participated? Who was in the group?
Anyway, I have to go now because I need to do my homework. Hope to hear from your soon.

I like this because it means I can read a book or a newspaper. On the Continent, everybody wants to tell you his life story. Some years ago I travelled by train from London to Paris. It was my first visit to Paris so I made up my mind to tour round France for my holidays. As I was going on a long journey I took a lot of books with me. There was an Englishman in the compartment with me and, in a typically English way, he did not speak a word during our journey through the English countryside or while crossing the Channel. But the minute we were in France he said, “Ah, now we are in France, we can talk.” And for the rest of the trip to Paris he told me his life story.
