The United States of America is a federal republic consisting of 50 states and a federal district. The country is situated mostly in central North America. However it owns several territories in the Caribbean and Pacific. The USA is bordered by Canada in the north and by Mexico in the south. It also has a maritime border with Russia. The country is washed by the Atlantic Ocean in the east and by the Pacific in the west.

The main part of the country consists of several highlands and lowlands regions. The highest mountains are the Appalachians and the Rocky mountains, which extend from Mexico to Canada. The main rivers of the US are the Mississippi, the Missouri, the Rio Grande, the Colorado and the Columbia. In the northern part of the country lie the regions of the Five Great Lake: Lake Superior, Lake Huron, Lake Michigan, Lake Ontario and Lake Erie. Due to mountain ranges stretching from north to south the country is unprotected from cold winds.

The climate of the USA varies from one region to another. Most of the land is in the temperate zone. The weather ranges from warm, wet conditions of the Appalachians to the semi desert or desert conditions in the western states. There is no winter in such southern states as Arizona or Florida. However, Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota experience very cold and severe winters. Speaking about the state of Alaska, it should be mentioned that those parts that lie above the Arctic Circle are covered with ice.

As for the country’s natural resources, the USA is rich in coal, oil, iron and some other minerals that form the basis of America’s industry.
