Tell me not, in mournful numbers,
Life is but an empty dream!
For the soul is dead that slumbers,
And things are not what they seem.
Life is real! Life is earnest!
And the grave is not its goal;
Dust thou art, to dust returnest,
Was not spoken of the soul.
Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,
Is our destined end or way;
But to act, that each to-morrow
Find us farther than to-day.
Art is long, and Time is fleeting,
And our hearts, though stout and brave,
Still, like muffled drums, are beating
Funeral marches to the grave.
In the world’s broad field of battle,
In the bivouac of Life,
Be not like dumb, driven cattle!
Be a hero in the strife!
Trust no Future, howe’er pleasant!
Let the dead Past bury its dead!
Act,— act in the living Present!
Heart within, and God o’erhead!
Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime,
And, departing, leave behind us
Footprints on the sands of time;
Footprints, that perhaps another,
Sailing o’er life’s solemn main,
A forlorn and shipwrecked brother,
Seeing, shall take heart again.
Let us, then, be up and doing,
With a heart for any fate;
Still achieving, still pursuing,
Learn to labor and to wait.
I do not have much free time. Twice a week after school I go in for sports (swimming), and on Saturday I go to the design section. But sometimes, when I do not need to do homework, help my mum on an au pair or go to a section, I still have free time. I like to spend it with friends and family. Sometimes, if the weather is good, we with the guys collect a team and play football or volleyball. And if it's raining or cold outside, we're going to someone at home and watching movies or playing games. Most of all I like to play a twister - it's a fun game, when you need to put your hands and feet on the multicolored figures laid out on the floor. Sometimes we play a monopoly, but everyone does not like it. On Sundays we try to get together with the whole family - mom, dad, me and my sister. We can go for a bike ride or just go for a walk in the park. Last winter we went to the forest and built a big snow fortress there. Until now, I am pleased to look at photos from that walk. Sometimes we go to visit our grandmother. This is Dad's mother, she lives far away in the village, so she often does not get to visit her. But for all the holidays, and sometimes just like that, we try to come. At the grandmother too it is interesting. Not far from her house there is a river, where we bathe and jump from the stream. There are a lot of mushrooms in the forest in autumn, which we collect, and my grandmother salt. She also keeps cows, and when one of them led the calf, we played with him. Some guys spend their free time sitting in front of a TV or computer. This is their right, but I'm not interested. I like to walk and communicate with friends or family. I am sure that free time should be spent with advantage. Of course, sometimes you want to relax and do nothing, but this should not become a bad habit, otherwise there will be nothing to remember.
