Биология — это наука об окружающем нас живом мире. Она нам лучше понять его и даже самих себя.

Самые простые практические применения биологических знаний — медицина и сельское хозяйство. Чем лучше мы понимаем, как устроен наш организм, тем более эффективные лекарства и лечения мы придумываем. И примером этому служит поддерживающее лечение диабетиков. Когда мы узнали, что их состояние можно скорректировать инсулином, мы начали добывать его из трупов. Такой инсулин, конечно , но имел кучу побочных действий и сложностей: от аллергических реакций и сложного получения до заражения болезнями типа ВИЧ или гепатит. Кроме того, такой инсулин был очень дорогим. Позже с генной инженерии мы создали бактерий, которые продуцируют чистый инсулин, который лишен всех этих недостатков. И сегодня мы можем поддерживать миллионы диабетиков дешевым и безопасным инсулином.

И так же с сельским хозяйством. Мы отбирали растения и животных веками по нужным нам признакам. Сегодняшние домашние растения и животные значительно отличаются от своих диких предков и диких сородичей. Мы создаем новые гибриды. Такие, которых не встретить в дикой природе (например, нектарин), или такие, для которых не важны природные катаклизмы и болезни.

В быту биология нам выращивать комнатные растения, понимать, почему нам назначают то или иное лечение, осмысленно гулять на природе, быть более ответственным к окружающему миру и многое другое.
