Ладожское озеро - это самое крупное озеро Европы. Площадь Ладожского озера составляет 18400 кв. км. Оно является неисчерпаемым источником питьевой воды для второго по величине города России - Санкт-Петербурга.Озеро слегка вытянуто в меридиональном направлении. Максимальная длина составляет около 200 км, ширина - 130 км. Наибольшая глубина - 230 м.Природа сама позаботилась о том, чтобы не было однообразия на ладожских берегах. Ладожское озеро богато островами (до 500 островов площадью около 300 кв. км), почти все они находятся на севере озера. Среди них выделяются размерами Валаамские острова с отвесно спускающимися в воду береговыми склонами. Из других островов крупными являются Коневец, Воссинансаари, Хейнясенсаари, Мантинсаари, Лункулансаари. В южной половине озера островов очень мало и размеры их небольшие: Зеленцы (в Шлиссельбургской губе), Птинов (в Волховской губе).
