Терек – одна из самых известных рек Кавказа
Главная водная артерия Северной Осетии – легендарный Терек, являющийся и центральной рекой Владикавказа. Восхищаясь его силой, А.С. Пушкин писал:
Меж горных стен несётся Терек,
Волнами точит дикий берег,
Клокочет вкруг огромных скал,
То здесь, то там дорогу роет,
Как зверь живой, ревёт и воет.
О происхождении названия Терека есть несколько гипотез: в частности, специалисты переводят его с разных языков и как «тополиная река», и как «стремительная вода».
Терек берет начало в Трусовском ущелье на границе с Грузией, прорезает Северную Осетию насквозь, принимая по пути в свои воды другие реки: Урух, Камбилеевка, Ардон, Гизельдон, Урсдон, протекает по территории Кабардино-Балкарии, Ставропольского края, Чечни и впадает в Каспийское море на территории Дагестана.
