Хлестаков - наивный баловень, пустейший дворянчик, прожигающий средства своего отца-помещика. Он пустышка, "без царя в голове", и он же воплощение нахальства. У него "легкость необыкновенная в мыслях". "Он просто глуп, - писал Гоголь, - болтает, потому что слушают, врет, потому что хорошо поел и выпил хорошего вина". Он легко переходит от фанфаронства к трусости, от заносчивости к унижению. Всеми его поступками руководит мелкое тщеславие, самое главное для него пыль в глаза пустить. Он может совершить любую подлость, потому что не имеет понятия о добре и зле. Он и игрок, и подлый волокита, и взяточник, и крестник (слуга его голодает, ему безразлично). Он врет, а все видят в этом вранье исполнение своих заветных желаний, их не шокирует, когда он, завравшись, хватает лишнего.
