Рассказ К. Г. Паустовского «Телеграмма» — это не банальное повествование об одинокой старушке и невнимательной дочери. Паустовский показывает, что Настя отнюдь не бездушна: она сочувствует Тимофееву, тратит много времени на устройство его выставки. Как же могло случиться, что заботящаяся о других Настя проявляет невнимание к родной матери? Оказывается, одно дело — увлекаться работой, делать ее от всего сердца, отдавать ей все силы, физические и душевные, а другое — помнить о близких своих, о матери — самом святом существе на свете, не ограничиваясь только денежными переводами и короткими записками. Вот такого испытания на истинную человечность Настя не выдерживает. «Она подумала о переполненных поездах, о тягучей, ничем не скрашенной скуке сельских дней — и положила письмо в ящик письменного стола» . В сутолоке ленинградских дней Настя чувствует себя интересной и нужной людям, ею движет желание проявить активность своей натуры. Есть в ней и эгоистическое чувство.
«На одной из площадок Настя достала зеркальце, напудрилась и усмехнулась, — сейчас она нравилась самой себе. Художники называли ее Сольвейг за русые волосы и большие холодные глаза» . Не присутствует ли доля эгоистического чувства даже в хлопотах о выставке Тимофеева? Недаром же на вернисаже говорят: «Этой выставкой мы целиком обязаны.. . одной из рядовых сотрудниц Союза, нашей милой Анастасии Семеновне... » «Настя смутилась до слез» . Гармонии между заботами о «дальних» и любовью к самому близкому человеку Насте достигнуть не удалось. В этом трагизм ее положения, в этом причина чувства непоправимой вины, невыносимой тяжести, которое посещает ее после смерти матери и которое поселится в ее душе навсегда.
Вероятно, смерть старой одинокой женщины, по сути брошенной своей дочерью, послужит уроком молоденькой учительнице, недавно приехавшей в деревню: ведь в городе у нее осталась мать, «вот такая же маленькая, вечно взволнованная заботами о дочери и такая же совершенно седая» .
