Ex. 1. The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World
Only one of the seven wonders of the ancient world (1) B. still exists. This is hardly (2) D. surprising, as it is probably the most dramatic and indestructible. The Egyptian Pyramids were (3) D. built between 2550 BC and 2480 BC as royal burial places. They (4) B. stand on the West bank of the Nile. However, the last century of human civilization has had a terrible (5) B. effect on them, as pollution is decaying the stone. All of the (6) C. other six wonders have been completely (7) B. destroyed by war or natural disasters. For example, the Colossus of Rhodes (8) B. fell down during an earthquake just 200 years after it was put up at the end of the 4th century. The statue was (9) B. disposed by scrap metal merchants in 654 AD. The Mausoleum in Halicarnassus survived (10) D. longer. It (11) A. lasted 19 centuries, but the white marble tomb was broken up and used for building (12) A. purpose by the crusaders in 1522. The statue of Zeus at Olympia is now (13) B. lost, but the temple in which it was housed still stands. 1) The Seven Wonders of the World are the Egyptian pyramids, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Lighthouse of Alexandria, the Colossus of Rhodes, the Statue of Zeus, the Temple of Artemis and the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus.
2) They were first described by a Greek historian named Herodotus.
3) They are seven because the Greeks believed that the number seven represented perfection and plenty, and because it was the number of the five planets known anciently, plus the sun and moon.
4) They are called "Wonders" because they all were remarkable constructions, amazing works of art and architecture.
5) To my mind the most fantastic wonder is the statue of Zeus which was made by the Athenian sculptor Phidias and placed in the temple of Zeus at Olympia, site of the ancient Olympics, around the mid-fifth century B.C.
6) It was built in honor of Zeus, the god of thunder.
7) It hasn't survived to the present day. An earthquake probably destroyed the temple. The statue was removed and later destroyed in a fire in 462 AD.
8) Its notable characteristics are rich decorations with gold and ivory. At 40 feet, the statue was so tall that its head nearly touched the top of the temple.
9) We need to know about the Seven Wonders of the World because they are parts of our heritage and culture.
