Coober Pedy is one of the cities in Australia, where residents live, shop etc. Uniquely, all community activities are carried out underground. Everything is done underground or you could say Coober Pedy is an underground city.

The story begins in 1916 as the largest opal mining operation in the world that has developed into an underground community. This location is safely out of the summer range of 120 degrees Fahreinhet or about 48 degrees Celsius in the region. Entire bedrooms, bookstores, churches and bars are set against Coober Pedy's ornate underground walls. After 100 years of living in such an excavated place, the people who called it home planned not to move.
