This is how the project began (in, by) the early 1970s.
Inventors of the Internet decided to try to link universities (by, with) computers.
They believed they could link computers (at, in) these universities by telephone.
University researchers working (at, on) the same project could share large amounts of information very quickly. The computer was linked to a telephone (with, by) a device called a modem. The modem turned computer information (into, for) electronic messages that are sounds.
These messages passed through the telephone equipment to the modem (on, at) the other end of the telephone line. This receiving modem changed the sound messages back into information the computer could use.
The university could share information (between, among) themselves and the links quickly grew into a major network.
Some experts said it was easier to think (of, about) this network of computers as streets in a city.
One could be surprised (at, with) how information was found (in, at) the given address.
Local networks were and are today like the city streets.
And communication links between distant local networks still resemble the major highways.
These highways make communication possible (between, among) networks in different areas of the world.
Today experts say there are hundreds of millions of computers connected (to, in) networks that provide links with computers (around, round) the world.
It will be no big exaggeration to say that in many countries computers are now available "(at, in) every street corner". However, modems are rarely used these days giving way (to, for) to Wi-Fi.
