Jim Davis, the famous cartoonist, was born in the USA, in 1945. When he was a child, Jim and his family lived on a small farm. Jim
and his brother grew up with lots of animals. He liked to draw funny pictures.
After he left high school in 1963, he went to Ball State University. In 1969, Jim started to work as a cartoonist. He created his own comic pet, Garfield. Jim named the fat orange cat after his grandfather, James Garfield. The comic strip Garfield first appeared in newspapers in 1978. Forty-one newspapers put Garfield inside their pages, and suddenly he was the best-loved cat in the world! From 1988 to 1994, Garfield had his own cartoon series on TV, too.Garfield is still a very popular comic cat!
