We all need words to speak and communicate. And for this reason, we are all curious about their origin. What about English and its origin?
Nearly 2 000 years ago it didn't exist. Five centuries later English was spoken by the people who lived in Great Britain. But their language wasn't English we know today. At the end of the 16th century English became the native language of about 6 million people. But it still wasn't spoken anywhere else except Great Britain.
Today English is spoken by 750 million people all over the world. English is one of the richest and the first truly global languages in the world. It has become the main language of business and sports. English has a vocabulary of about 500 000 words. But many words in English were borrowed from Latin, Dutch, French, Spanish and other languages.
I leave my house and turn left. I go past my neighbors' house to the pedestrian crossing and here I cross the road. Next, I go right past the bank and a small park. There are no cars or buses here. It is a pedestrian zone. At last I turn to the right and enter my school yard.
