Sport Unites People
We live in a divided world, and sport is a unique social phenomenon that unites people from different countries and classes.
When we go to stadiums to cheer for our favourite teams and players, we do not think about differences in our background, values or beliefs. It is a well known fact that when the Olympic Games were organised in Ancient Greece, a tradition of the Olympic Truce was created - all conflicts would end for seven days before and after the Games. It was done so in order to let athletes, their families and others travel to and from the Olympics in peace. The Olympic Truce was reintroduced at the modern games in 1994. Another great example of sport uniting people is the opening and closing ceremonies of the 23rd Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, when the world saw athletes from North and South Korea marching together behind a “unified Korea” flag.
We all know the power of sport. No other social activity brings people together in such great numbers, and with so much passion and enjoyment. So let there be more sport events that can bring the world together.
