The Moskva River is one of the most beautiful things in our capital. Very wide, mighty with stone made banks, pedestrian and transport bridges it attracts a lot of attention of tourists and residents.
In summer you can ride a waterbus or visit one of the beaches for a swim in the north-western part of the city. It's awesome to go on a famous cruise "Moskovskaya krugosvetka" and travel to Nizhni Novgorod within a couple of days and then come back to the capital.
That's right that nowadays there are only touristic boats in Moscow but before it used to be a very busy area. It connected the capital with Novgorod and Smolensk, it also went to Volga and the Don river.
Long ago the Moscow river used to disturb people's life a lot because it used to burst its banks regularly. That's why in 1783 the Vodootvodny Channel was built to avoid flooding. That's how an artificial island Balchug was formed, today it's called the Kremlin Island.
The Moskva river is a medium river in our country, it's 502 kilometers long. It enters the city in the north-western in Strogino area and leaves the city in the south-east. The narrowest part of the river is right in front of the Kremlin but even there it's 120 meters wide.
Walking along the marble waterfront is also one of the favorite things to do for tourist and Moscow residents. When you walk there you can enjoy the beauty of the river and also visit different sightseeings such as churches and monasteries and there are a lot of them along the Moskva river.

Москва-река — это, безусловно, одно из главных украшений нашей столицы. Широкая, полноводная, с каменными берегами, пешеходными и транспортными мостами, она приковывает внимание не только гостей, но и жителей города.
Летом здесь можно покататься на речном трамвайчике или даже покупаться на одном из пляжей, расположенных в северо-западной части города. А как здорово, например, отправиться в знаменитый круиз «Московская кругосветка», чтобы за несколько дней доплыть на теплоходе до Нижнего Новгорода и вернуться в столицу.
Да, теперь по Москве-реке ходят исключительно туристические суда, но раньше здесь пролегала целая транспортная магистраль. Она связывала столицу с Новгородом и Смоленском, также этот путь имел сообщение с Волгой и Доном.
В Москва-река причиняла много беспокойств жителям города, так как часто в период дождей и непогоды выходила из берегов. Поэтому в 1783 году, чтобы исключить вероятность наводнения, здесь был построен Водоотводный канал. Так образовался необычный искусственный остров Балчуг, называемый иначе Кремлевским островом.
