Peter and Paul fortress was built by decree of Peter I to protect the Neva Delta from the Swedes. It is located in the heart of St. Petersburg on hare island. It was here in the late spring of 1703 by decree of Peter I began construction of our city.
The fortress is the Peter and Paul Cathedral - the burial vault of Russian emperors. Here are buried almost all the Russian emperors and empresses starting from Peter I and ending with Nicholas II and many members of the Imperial family.
