_ Ireland

_ Ireland is one of the two large islands of the British Isles. It is surrounded on the north, west and south by the Atlantic Ocean. In the east it is separated from _ Great Britain by the Irish Sea, which narrows to the North Channel in the North and St. George’s Channel in the South. Irish mountains are low; the highest, _ Carrantuohill, is only 3414 feet high. The most important river is the Shannon. There are many small islands in it, _ Lough Corrib and _ Lough Mask are two of the largest.

Most of the island is occupied by the Irish Republic. The capital of the country is _ Dublin situated on the banks of the Liffey. _ Dublin is an attractive city, with wide streets and squares. The city spreads out in all directions, even to the northernmost foothills of the Wicklow Mountains. _ Dublin is the home of the oldest university in _ Ireland, _ Trinity College, founded in 1591. The National University of _ Ireland is also located in _ Dublin, as are important libraries, galleries, museums and theatres like the Irish Literary Theatre or the Abbey Theatre.
