George Parker was a brilliant conman. About 100 years ago, he offered to sell Brooklyn Bridge to a rich tourist who had just arrived in the USA. Parker invited the man to look at 'his' bridge. At first the man refused, but Parker was a very persuasive conman and he insisted! He explained why he wanted to sell the bridge. Parker convinced the tourist to buy it by producing false documents. These showed that he owned the bridge. The man agreed to buy it. But it was actually a public bridge - it wasn't Parker's at all! He sold it a few times to different people, but he was arrested after a buyer complained to the police.

Last was both the happiest and the worst day in my parents’ life. It was the happiest because my dad 1.had won the lottery, and the worst because we couldn’t find the lottery ticket! After my parents 2.had looked everywhere for it, they began to panic. Then my dad remembered something: on the day he 3.had bought the lottery ticket, he 4.had been wearing his old black jacket. The ticket was in the pocket! When dad told this my mum, her face went white. The previous day, she 5.had given the jacket to a charity for homeless people! My dad didn’t waste any time. After he 6.had explained the situation to all our friends and relatives, they agreed to help. They 7.had been searching everywhere for a week. Nobody 8.had seen the jacket. By then, my dad 9.had lost 5 kilos. He walked the streets with red yes, talking to himself. He looked terrible. That Sunday, seven days after he 10.had won the lottery, he was out in the street again. He was cold and tired so he sat on the grass to rest for a while…
