The Most Popular Daily Papers
1. The «popular» newspapers respond to their estimates of their
readers' interest. They use enormous headlines for the leading
items of each day, which are one day political, one day to do with
crime, one day sport, one day some odd happening. They have
their pages of political report and comment, thrive on sensational
stories and excitement.
2. The two archetypal popular papers, the Daily Mail and Daily
Express, were both built up in the early twentieth century. The
Express was built up by a man born in poverty in Canada. He built
up his newspaper in Britain, not only on crime and human interest
stories, but on his simple message about the greatness of the
British Empire. The circulation of the Express at one time
exceeded 4 million copies a day. Now the daily sales are not much
more than half of their highest figure. The history of the Daily
Mail, with its more conventional conservatism, is not greatly
different. Both of these papers have become «tabloids» (printed on
smaller sheets of paper) within the past ten years.
3. In popular journalism the Daily Mirror became a serious
rival of the Express and Mail in the 1940s. It was always tabloid,
always devoted more space to pictures. After 1945 it regularly
supported the Labour Party. The Daily Mirror also became the
biggest-selling daily newspaper. For many years its sales have been
above 4 million, sometimes well above.4. The Times is the most famous of all British newspapers, and
has always been the paper of the «Establishment», who use it for
announcements of births, marriages and deaths. Politically it is
independent but inclined to be sympathetic to the Conservative
Party. It is not an organ of the Government. Sometimes its
leading articles may be written after private consultation with
people in, for example, the Foreign Office; but they are often
critical of any government. The letters to the Editor, which are
printed next to the leading articles, are very influential, and may
lead to wide discussion of the views which they express.
5. The Guardian was called the Manchester Guardian until '
1959. It became a truly national paper. Later it moved its base to
London. In quality, style and reporting it is equal with The Times;
in politics it is perhaps best described as «radical». It is more
favourable to the Liberal Party than to the Conservatives. It has
made great progress during the past thirty years, particularly
among intelligent people who find The Times too uncritical of
established interests.
6. The Financial Times has recently shed its old commercial
specialism and has become a major quality paper. Its circulation
has grown enormously.

My school day starts early in the morning. I wake up at seven o'clock. Then I get up, wash myself, get dressed and have my breakfast. After that I go to school. In the classroom my friends and I usually chat till the bell rings. Then we have five or six lessons where we learn a lot of new things. During the breaks we have a rest, talk, play different games, have lunch.
After school I go home and have dinner. After a short rest, I start doing my homework and then I am free. I listen to music, meet my friends. Sometimes I play computer games or watch TV. Sometimes I do some work about the house: tidy my room, vacuum the carpet, wash the dishes, go shopping, take the rubbish out and so on. I go to bed at half past ten.

Computer addicts are the minority of computer users but there is no doubt that more and more young people are computer literate. Computer studies is a subject in many schools and many young people have personal computers. About one in three hundred computer owners spend almost all their time using computers.Ninety six per cent of them are males of all ages. All of them spend an average of twenty hours per week on home computers. The majority of the adults also use computers at work. All the computer addicts are very intelligent. They have been interested in science and technology from a very early age and they are usually very shy people who like being alone.A survey in a school showed that fewer girls are interested in computers because girls are less likely to have a computer. Even if they have one, they use then less frequently than boys. Possibly it is because we think of computers as something to do with maths and science, which are traditionally 'male' subjects. Possibly it is because most of the computer teachers are men, who give the girls less attention. Possibly parents think it is less important for girls to have computer skills.Computer addicts are usually very shy people. Using computers gives them confidence. They love debugging and solving problems, develop programs and love learning programming languages. They learnt to communicate with other users through computer networks and the people they met in school and work think of them as experts who could help and advise when they had problems with their machines. A few spend their time 'hacking' and one addict left a message on a computer of Buckingham House. Very few computer addicts play computer games, but many people use a computer exclusively for games. Some parents worry about computer games because they think their children won't be able to communicate with real people in the real world. But parents do not need to worry. According to research computer addicts usually do well after they have left school. Parents also do not need to worry that computer addiction will make their children become unfriendly and unable to communicate with people. It is not the computer that makes them shy. In fact, what they know about computers improves their social lives. They become experts and others come to them for help and advice. For most children computer games are a craze. Like any other craze, such as skate-boarding, the craze is short-lived. It provides harmless fun and a chance to escape. If we didn't have these computer addicts, we wouldn't have modern technology. They are the inventors of tomorrow.
