Marching bands performed for the crowds. They wore traditional clothing and played the bagpipes. The most popular event of the day was the'tug of war'. Two teams held onto a rope and tried to pull the other team over the line. 'Tossing the caber' was also popular. The athletes had to run holding a heavy tree trunk, the caber, upright.
