The great American writer Jack London was born in the town of San Frincisco in 1876. The young boy longed for knowledge, but Jack's father could not send him to school, as the family was very poor. London began working when he was quite young. He sold different newspapers in the streets. At the age of fourteen he began to work at a factory. Then he worked as a fisherman. He had to work many hours _ a day. Nevertheless he experienced a great want and countless hardships at that time. In spite of his hard work he was very fond of reading and read very much. He studied in school and later on in the university. He took great interest both in history and in philosophy. In 1896 London started for Alaska for the yellow metal. He did not live in the North. for a long time. Soon he came back to San Francisco, and became famous as a writer. He greatly contributed to the development of progressive American literature. At present his name is known all over the world.
Every day in elementary school in America begins at 9.20 a.m. Children have classes till 3.15 p.m. At 12 o’clock children have lunch. Many boys and girls bring their lunch from home. But some of them go for lunch to a school cafeteria.
Mrs. Bradley prepares school lunches almost every weekday for her two children. Sometimes she gives the children money and they eat in the school cafeteria. But usually the children prefer to take a lunch from home.
This morning Mrs. Bradley is making peanut butter and cheese sandwiches, the children's favorite. She puts two bottles of apple juice for the children to drink. She is going to put the sandwiches, some cherry tomatoes and two bananas in their lunchboxes. The lunchbox is easy for the children to carry to school.
