Life on the tiny Carribean island of Antigua has been the same for centuries. The few hundred inhabitants of the island (1) have always lived a quiet life, growing their own vegetables and catching fish. This nearly (2) changed, however, when a group of hotel developers (3) visited the island. They (4) offered to buy the houses and land of the locals so as to build a huge resort. The Antiguans (5) refused to sell. When the hotel developers (6) realised that the islanders wouldn't change their minds, they (7) left and the Antiguans (8) have enjoyed their peaceful lifestyle ever since.
The Grand Canyon is one of America’s main tourist attractions, attracting about five million visitors a year. It is so big that you must go there yourself to feel its true size and beauty. For thousands of years, the area has been continuously inhabited by Native Americans who built settlements within the Canyon and its many caves. The native inhabitants of this places Indians- Paiute called this natural wonder Kaibab, which means the mountain that has been put upside down. The Grand Canyon is not the deepest Canyon in the world nor the widest; however, it is known for its visually overwhelming size and its intricate and colorful landscape. It’s interesting that there are different kinds of plants and animals on opposite sides of the Canyon. The south side is dry and desert country. The north side has tall forests. The Canyon looks different at different times of day, and in different seasons and weather. At sunrise and sunset the red, gold, brown, and orange colors of the rocks are especially clear and bright.
