После собакевича чичиков отправляется к плюшкину. ему в глаза сразу бросается ветхость и бедность усадьбы. несмотря на то, что деревня была большая и в ней жило 800 крестьян, ч. отмечает, что все дома были старые и покосившиеся, люди жили в ужасной нищете. дом тоже не отличался красотой. возможно, раньше он был прекрасным и богатым строением, но прошли годы, за ним никто не следил, и он пришел в полное запустение. хозяин пользовался только несколькими комнатами, остальные были заперты. все окна, кроме двух, были закрыты или залеплены газетой. и дом, и усадьба пришли в полный упадок. в интерьере ч. замечает огромные кучи хлама. хозяин настолько жаден, что подбирает каждую вещь, и иногда доходит до того, что ворует у своих крестьян предметы, даже совершенно ему не нужные. вся мебель была старой и ветхой, как и сам дом. на стенах висели неказистые картины. видно было, что хозяин уже давно не покупал ничего нового. внешность плюшкина была настолько бедна и неопрятна, что ч. сначала принял его за ключницу. одежда его была сильно поношена, лицо, казалось, никогда не могло выразить никаких чувств. ч. говорит, что если бы увидел его у храма, то непременно принял бы за нищего. он удивлен и сначала не может поверить, что у этого человека 800 душ. понять личность п-на рассказанная автором . гоголь пишет, что раньше п-н был хорошим и бережливым хозяином. но жена умерла, дети разъехались, и он остался один. самая характерная черта п-на - это патологическая скупость. он искренне радуется, когда узнает о покупке душ ч-вым, т. к. понимает, что для него это выгодно. на его лице даже "отражается слабое подобие чувства".
