Past Perfect передает: 1. действие, предшествующее моменту. 2. действие, предшествующее другому действию. Past Simple передает: 1. действие, совпадающее с моментом, 2. действие одновременное другому действию, 3. действие идущее последовательно за другим действием мгновенного совершения. Допустим, в первом будет в форме Past Perfect, потому что до этого упоминается, что его друг БЫЛ уверен. Если бы было написано, что мой друг уверен (сейчас, обычно), то было была бы форма "discovered". То есть нужно смотреть, в первую очередь, на глагол, который стоит в начале. Если он в времени, то нужно использовать конструкцию с Had , а если в настоящем, то обычно используют Simple.
