Tortoises are magnificent creatures. They have been on the earth for more than 200 million years. They evolved before mammals, birds, crocodiles, snakes and even lizards. Turtles and tortoises are the only reptiles’ that have a shell. Their bodies are protected by a shell on top and underneath. Tortoises can retract their heads and all their limbs including their tails into their shells when they feel threatened or attacked by predators. They have extremely strong mouths but no teeth instead they have horny type beaks.
