Иногда обладание тату может означать принадлежность к определённой группе. У банд часто имеется специальная одежда и тату,чтобы распознать определённые группы. К примеру,в одной банде все носят зелёные армейские куртки и имеют большую тату "Xs" на руке. И не только у банд есть своя специальная "униформа". Молодёжь часто принадлежит к различным дружеским группам. К примеру,некоторые носят только чёрную одежду. А другие -- тату. Когда чьи-нибудь друзья что-нибудь делают,к примеру бьют тату,то тот человек,вероятно,сделает то же самое,т.е. набьёт тату. 
СМИ -- другая крупная причина популярности тату в Северной Америке. Многие СМИ показывают тату на фото. Знаменитые спортсмены с татуировками печатаются в журналах. Часто мы видим в журналах и по телевизору моделей в дизайнерской одежде,показывающих своё татуированное тело с подробными и иногда красочными рисунками. СМИ связывает тату с идеями о богатстве,успехе и статусе. И,как результат,многие люди решают набить тату ради своей модной и статусной значимости. 
Но не всегда влияние от других людей и СМИ воздействует на желание человека набить тату. Многие люди делают это ради выражения своей артистичной натуры,их убеждений или чувств -- другими словами,показывая свою индивидуальность. Музыканты в рок-группах могут набить на руке гитару. Защитники окружающей среды -- вымирающих животных на плече. Влюблённые -- имена друг друга в сердечках. Тату может быть общественным проявлением того,что важно для человека.
