a. I asked them whether they had ever used turmeric during the cooking process.

The sentence is reported speech, indicating that the speaker asked someone in the past about their use of turmeric. When reporting a question, we use "whether" or "if" instead of the original question word. In this case, "whether" is used. Additionally, since the original question is in the present perfect tense, we change it to the past perfect tense in reported speech. Therefore, the correct answer is "I asked them whether they had ever used turmeric during the cooking process."

b. Doctor advised not to eat a lot before I go to bed.

The correct answer is "Doctor advised me not to eat a lot before I went to bed." In reported speech, we use an infinitive after certain verbs, such as "advised." The pronoun "me" is used to indicate that the doctor's advice was given to the person speaking.

a. he said that he would bring me a book tomorrow.

The correct answer is "He said that he would bring me a book tomorrow." In reported speech, we change the verb tense from direct speech to indirect speech. In this case, the future tense "I will bring" changes to "he would bring." Additionally, "tomorrow" remains the same as it indicates a specific time in the future.

b. The nutritionists recommend eating more fruit and vegetables.

The correct answer is "The nutritionists recommend eating more fruit and vegetables." After certain verbs, such as "recommend," we use the gerund form of the verb ("eating") to indicate the action advised.

d. He asked if I wanted to watch this movie at home on computer or in the cinema.

The correct answer is "He asked if I wanted to watch this movie at home on computer or in the cinema." When reporting a yes/no question, we use "if" or "whether." The verb tense in reported speech remains the same as in direct speech.

c. anyone, d. anybody

The correct answers are "anyone" and "anybody." Both words can be used to indicate an indefinite person. In this case, the sentence suggests that nobody can keep up with the fast pace of microtechnology.

a. plenty, b. great deal, c. a lot

The correct answers are "plenty," "great deal," and "a lot." All three phrases can be used to indicate a large quantity or amount. In this case, the sentence suggests that there is enough time to catch the train, so there's no need to hurry.

c. David's

The correct answer is "David's." The sentence indicates that there are two mistakes in a letter belonging to David. To show possession, we use an apostrophe after the owner's name, followed by an "s." Therefore, "David's" is the correct form.

a. were

The correct answer is "were." The sentence indicates that when the speaker was in college, phonetics was their favorite subject. The past tense of the verb "be" in the plural form is "were."

c. is

The correct answer is "is." The sentence indicates that this pair of scissors is blunt. Since "scissors" is a plural noun, the correct form of the verb "be" in the present tense is "is."

has been fixing

The correct answer is "has been fixing." The sentence indicates that the person's hands were covered in oil because they had been fixing the car all morning. The present perfect progressive tense is used to indicate an action that started in the past and is still continuing or has just finished.

long

The correct answer is "long." The sentence indicates that it won't take the person a long time as the walk is only ten minutes. The word "long" is used to indicate a duration of time.

Children must go to school when they are (1) seven years old. First, they go to (2) infant schools where they learn the first steps in reading, writing, and using numbers. When children leave the infant school, at the age of (3) eleven, they enter the (4) junior schools until they are about (5) eleven years old.

During their time in junior schools, the children study English, arithmetic, history, (6) geography, and participate in organized games. Towards the end of their (7) fourth year in the junior school, English schoolchildren have to write their Eleven Plus Examinations. Based on the results of these exams, they will be placed in a (8) secondary school of a certain type the following September.

It is important to note that the secondary technical school, despite its name, is not a (9) specialized school. It teaches many general subjects. On the other hand, a grammar school is a type of secondary school that offers a full theoretical secondary education, including (10) specialized subjects like geography, and students have the freedom to choose which subjects and languages they wish to study.

Once they complete their studies at the grammar school, students may take the General Certificate of Education at the ordinary level. Others continue their studies for an additional two or three years to obtain the General Certificate of Education at the advanced level, which allows them to (12) enter university. At university, they can pursue further education in their chosen field of interest.

In addition to the core subjects, schools also offer various extracurricular activities such as nature study, swimming, music, art, and religious instruction. These activities aim to provide a well-rounded education and develop students' skills and talents beyond academics.
