Christopher Columbus was the person who discovered America in 1492.
He was the son of a poor Italian weaver. From his early childhood Columbus was interested in big ships. One day he went off to sea and then made lots of voyages. The seamen of that time didn’t sail far as they knew little of the Atlantic Ocean and didn’t know what was in it or beyond it. When the astronomers declared that the earth was round, Columbus wanted to check it and reach India by sailing to the West.
Being interested in shorter trade routes to India, the Spanish Government gave Columbus three small ships and less than a hundred men so that he could try to carry out his voyage. In 1492 Columbus left Spain on this great expedition. As they sailed West they reached the Canary Islands and the next day they saw land, which was given the name of San Salvador. However, Columbus had no idea that he had discovered a new continent; he thought it was an unknown part of India. He came back to Spain in triumph.
Some time later a man named Amerigo Vespucci explored the same coast as Columbus and found that it wasn’t the coast of India. He said it was a New World. For a long time the land had no special name. Only in 1506, the year of Christopher Columbus’s death, it was named America after Amerigo. However, Columbus was the true discoverer of the continent.
European people came to the New World for various reasons. Some hoped to find gold and silver. Priests and missionaries came to bring the Christian religion to the Indians. Among all, there was a small group of English people called Pilgrims who wanted to start a new life and to have no religious problems they had in England. In 1620 on the ship «Mayflower» they landed in the north-east of America, set up a colony and called that part of the country «New England».
That region of ancient Egypt was famous for its advanced technology. Without them we would be far behind now, and you can still see many of those inventions being used these days. Probably the most iconic egyptian sight are the Pyramids. It's hard to imagine what kind of strength and engineering genius it took to assemble such huge giants. Unfortunately we can't say for sure how they managed to put up the pyramids, almost all the evidence of the actual construction work was destroyed and can't be restored. But we know for sure that it required a lot of effort and it appears to be a very expensive project. Slaves who used to serve the pharaoh cut rocks to produce thick massive bricks that they had to drag on wooden rails to the construction site in the middle of the day despite the heat of the sun. Heat and shorteage of water caused many deaths among builders. It is still unknow how they managed to get those brick on the very top of the pyramids. The Pyramids deserve the title of the World's Wonder, and it's the only wonder left on Earth.
In my opinion, it is quite difficult to find a job for me and other young people of my age. Unfortunately the legislation states that we are not yet of age to get a paid job. However, if you are a hard-working energetic type, and you can dedicate your time to go out there and ask people for work, you might be lucky. Many of my friends were successful, but you need to have a certain personality to achieve results. As we are all yet unskilled workers we can do only the basic jobs, such as promotion and maybe client coordination. Before getting any part-time job you need to have a clear understanding of your abilities; you have to be careful and responsible with your job as people are going to see you as an honest and reliable person, which means you can't say you'll do it and then disappepear due to the change of plans. If you're trying to get a position that involves speaking to clients, you need to be friendly, patient and polite; the communcative approach is very important there. In fact, you need to show a certain level of intelligence as well, as usually you will be dealing with adult clientelle. There are plenty of websites and newspapers where you can look for job openings, but I think that the best way is to pick a company you would like to work for and ask them directly. That's what I did last summer and even though I had to wait for the answer I finally got the job assisting in the admin department. Such job won't get you a lot of money, but earning a small sum of your own is always a delight
