At the foot of the Khamar-Daban, on the vast steppes, in a quiet tract, in 30 km from Ulan-Ude, is the spiritual capital of the Buddhist traditional Sangha of Russia – Ivolginsky datsan.
In Sunny weather, sparkling Golden temples, greet pilgrims and visitors. It seems that is stopped the time is fleeting, and the air is filled with pungent and spicy aroma of blooming herbs.
Ivolginsky datsan was opened in 1945. Here is the residence of Pandito Hambo Lama, head of Buddhists of Russia. At datsan opened Buddhist University, where instruction Chubarikov-novices. The altars and interiors of the temples is decorated with original works of art. The datsan is protected by the state as a monument of religious architecture. The complex contains the main temple "Sogen", temples "Courin Dugan", "Sakhiuusan Sume", "Moanin Dugan", "Magarin Sume", "Devain", "Zhud Dugan", as well as the Palace of the Twelfth Khambo Lama Dashi Dorzho Itigelov. Besides, on the territory of the monastery there are educational buildings of the University, sacred stupas-suburgans, a hotel, a Museum of monuments of Buddhist art, various offices and homes of lamas.
To this day Ivolginsky datsan is the center of Buddhism in Russia, visited by many worshipers, pilgrims and tourists from all over the world
