What is it? Who says "meow"? " Simon is in the living room. Living room is beautiful. In the center of the room is a round table. There is a large armchair by the fireplace. When it's cold, Simon likes to read interesting books in this chair. "Meow meow!" Now he is looking for a sound: under the table, behind the armchair, between the sofa and the armchair. "Nothing!". Simon is in his room. He is still looking for a source of sound: on the floor, under the bed, above the cupboard, under the carpet. "Nothing!" Simon in the pantry. And he is still looking for the source of the sound: in the left corner, in the right corner. "Nothing!" Simon is in his kitchen. In the middle of the room is a box. Simon is surprised. "Meow meow!" Comes from the box. "Who is this?" Simon asks. "What's in this box?" It's a secret. Now he sees two black ears, a pair of big green eyes ... and a little pink nose! "Oh, it's a kitten!" Says Simon. He is so happy! He had a new friend. They will play hide and seek together.
"We use could for general ability. But if we want to say that somebody did something in a specific situation, we use managed to or was/were able to (not could)".
То есть,
мы используем could для выражения возможности или что-то сделать вообще, в целом. В то время как managed to используется для того, чтобы указать, что кому-то удалось что-то сделать в конкретной, "единичной" ситуации.
Сравните:
Jack was an excellent tennis player when he was younger. He could beat anybody. (Джек отлично играл в теннис, когда был моложе. Он мог обыграть любого) и Jack and Andy played a match yesterday. Andy played well, but Jack managed to beat him. (Вчера Джек и Энди играли (в теннис). Энди играл хорошо, но Джек смог (Джеку удалось) обыграть его)
