Liza Minelli was born on March 12, 1946, in Hollywood, California. She is the oldest of her mother’s three children. Her mother, of course, was Judy Garland and her father the film director Vincente Minelli. He was the second of Miss Garland’s five husbands. In 1951 Liza’s parents divorced. Liza spent most of her childhood in Hollywood, and she often liked (a) visiting her mother’s or father’s film sets at the MGM Studios. She was interested in everything to do with making films, but she especially enjoyed (b) watching dancers such as Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, and Cyd Clarisse. ‘I learned all their dances,’ Liza Minelli (c) said in an interview in 1972, ‘and I went home and practised them all in front of the mirror.’ When she was (d) only two and a half years old she appeared in her first movie, called In the Good Old Summertime, and five years later she danced on the stage of the Palace Theatre in New York. She knew that she wanted (e) to be a professional actress when she saw a musical on Broadway in 1960. ‘The kids on stage looked fantastic,’ she (f) told her biographer, Jeremy Craig, ‘so I decided (g) to go to drama school (h) immediately. She won her first film award when she was nineteen for her perfomance in a musical called Flora, the Red Menace, and since then she has won five more awards. She won an Oscar in 1973 as Sally Bowles in Cabaret. She has made more than fifteen films and recorded eight albums. She made her first album, Liza! Liza! in 1963. She has had an interesting life, but it has not always been easy for her. She was an alcoholic for many years and has also had problems with drugs. In 1984 she went to the Betty Ford Centre in California and she has been much happier since then. She has been married three times, but (i) unfortunately none of the marriages have lasted very long. In 1991 she made a film called Stepping Out, which was about a group of people who find happiness and a purpose in life through dancing. ‘Next year I’d like (j) to produce a film about my mother,’ she said, ‘and I hope to start writing it soon.
