Russia is my homeland. It is the largest country in the world, that is situated on two continents: Europe and Asia.The population of Russia is about 145 million people of 170 different nationalities. It is washed by twelve seas and three oceans, and has eleven time zones. So when the sun rises in the east of the country, everyone in the west is still asleep.
Russia is the land of many wonders: the thickest forests, called taiga, in Siberia; hot thermal springs in Kamchatka; polar nights in Murmansk and white nights in Saint-Petersburg. My country also has a large number of rivers and lakes, including the longest river in Europe, the Volga; and the Baikal - the clearest and deepest lake in the world.
The official name of my country is the Russian Federation. The national flag of Russia has white, blue and red horizontal stripes. Moscow, as the capital, is probably the most popular city of Russia with its picturesque scenery of the Kremlin and the Saint Basil's Cathedral on Red Square. One can often see the image of these tourists attractions printed on postcards.
But the greatest thing about my country in my opinion is the people. Sometimes they appear to be a little gloomy from the outside, but they are genuinely kind and warm-hearted.
A lot of outstanding scientists, artists, musicians, writers etc. consider Russia to be their homeland. And as a citizen myself I am very proud to live in and be a part of this beautiful country.
My winter vacation passed wonderfully. This year heavy snow covered the ground, so there was no time to get bored. Together with friends we drove in a sleigh, made snowmen, played snowballs and just had fun. In the evening I watched TV, talked on the phone with friends and occasionally played on the computer.
The second week my family took me to a winter resort. I don’t ski very well, so it was hard in the beginning to learn how to ski down mountain slopes. But the next day, I learned to keep balance and fell to the ground only a few times. At a ski resort we spent 4 days. During this period I managed to make friends and girlfriends, with whom now I keep in touch and correspond through the internet. We hope to see one another again at the same place next year.
By the end of winter break my spirits fell. Suddenly it came in on me that I had not done some homework. But still there were a couple of days left, and I had time to do the tasks before the beginning of classes. How quickly vacations end! And how long a school year lasts!
The Internet has entered our everyday lives. Everyone knows that the Internet is a global computer network that connects hundreds of millions of users worldwide and helps us to communicate with each other. History of the Internet started in the United States in 1969. It was a military experiment designed to help survive a nuclear war, when everything can be contaminated by radiation dangerous to go out, to deliver any information. Information sent over the Internet, goes from one computer to another through the shortest and safest routes available. Thanks to this two computers on the network can communicate with each other until there is at least one route between them. This technology was called packet switching.
