.Britain forms the greater part of the British Isles, which lie off the north-west coast of mainland Europe.GB is in fact the biggest of the group of islands which lies between the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. The total area is 242,534-sq. km. “GB’ is a geographical expression but the “UK” is a political expression. The full name is the UK of GB and Northern Ireland. The population of the UK is 57 mil people. The largest and the most populated part of the UK is England. Its population is 47. 837 mil people and its capital is London. Scotland is the most northern part of the island of GB. Its population is over 5 mil people. The capital of Scotland is Edinburgh.

The typical British family has a car, a colour TV set, a washing machine, and a cat or dog as well. They start the day at about 7 o'clock, have breakfast at 8. and are off to work by 8.30 . More and more women now go out to work as well as men. The children have lunch at school at about 12.30, and come home at 4 in the afternoon. Their parents are usually home by 6 o'clock, and the family eats together at 6.30 or 7. In the evenings, father may go to the pub for a drink, or stay at home and watch TV with the others. Children go to bed early, at about 8 o'clock, two or three hours before their parents

В Британской семье. среднестатистической. есть машина. телевизор. стиральная машина. собака или кот. они встают в 7. завтракают в 8 и идут на работу в 8 30. Женщины тоже работают. дети обедают в школе в 12 30 и приходят домой около 4х. родители приходят в 6 и они все вместе ужинают в 6 30 или 7 часов. British Museums     There are many museums in London. One of them is the Tate Gallery in Millmank, which presents modern masters of England and France. There are some fine examples of modern sculpture. Its collection of French Impressionists is marvellous. There is the Victoria and Albert Museum in Brompton Road. It has an outstanding collection of the applied arts of all countries and periods.The National Gallery in Trafalgar Square has one of the best picture collection in the world. It has the most valuable display of French paintings from the early of the Impressionists, and, of course, the finest English painting, with Gainsborough, Turner, Constable and others. It shows the progress of Italian painting from the medieval to the Renaissance, some outstanding pictures of the old Roman masters. It also has a great variety of Dutch and Flemish masters and an excellent choice of Spanish painters. There are great treasures dispersed in private collections all over the world. The Queen's collection is the most valuable among them.
